Vignettes for Switzerland!

In Switzerland, a vignette is mandatory for all motor vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 tonnes when driving on class 1 and 2 freeways and national roads.

You can either buy an e-vignette or purchase a vignette with a sticker.

If you however decide to buy the sticker vignette, the vignette must be affixed on the windshield.

The e-vignette as an alternative to the traditional physical vignette sticker is new in Switzerland. This new system allows you to register your license plate online and pay easily. Plus, you don’t need to fix the new vignette on the windshield.

Buying an e-vignette has never been so easy. You can purchase an annual vignette for Switzerland through our website; the best thing is, you can do it from the comfort of your home.

Buy your electronic vignette for Switzerland online and you are ready to go and explore.

Heavy vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes are exempt from the vignette requirement. Instead, they are subject to the heavy vehicle charge.

But, if you drive a car, motorcycle, trailer, caravan, van, or motorhome weighing up to 3.5 tonnes on Swiss freeways and expressways, you must have a valid vignette.

Driving without a valid vignette in Switzerland can result in hefty fines.

Why do I need a vignette?

The Role of Vignettes

Toll systems differ from one country to another, and in most European countries, the vignette is now a widely accepted form of proof of payment for tolls. By paying tolls, you are contributing to the upkeep and development of road infrastructure, which ensures the best possible conditions for your journey.

Requirements and Tolls

To use Swiss motorways, all motor vehicles and trailers weighing up to 3.5 tonnes must have a vignette. The vignette can be obtained in the form of a toll sticker or as a digital vignette. Motorhomes up to 3.5t GVW and motorbikes are also subject to the vignette obligation. Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 t do not require a vignette. Additional tolls are charged for some tunnels and roads due to high construction and maintenance costs.

Vignette obligation in Switzerland

Since 1985, the use of Swiss highways and freeways and financing the cost of maintenance, operations, and the construction of new roads in Switzerland, requires a valid vignette.

The vignette serves as proof of permission to drive on Swiss roads, and it is mandatory for vehicles and trailers under 3.5 tons of gross vehicle weight.

There are two types of vignettes: adhesive and digital.

As of 01.08.2023, drivers can register their vignette digitally on their license plate without attaching an adhesive toll sticker. However, the option to attach the adhesive vignette to the windshield still exists.

The digital vignette is valid throughout all of Switzerland. For some tunnels, an additional toll is required.

For the Great Saint Bernard Tunnel and Munt-La-Schera Tunnel, tolls are charged in addition to the vignette.

Note: Before entering a motorway, check whether a valid e-vignette is issued. Most of the rental cars already have a valid toll sticker.

Vignette requirement and which vehicles does it concern?

All vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight that travel through Switzerland must have a toll sticker or vignette. This requirement applies to all motorways and highways, which are marked by white-green signs.

However, there are exceptions where the vignette obligation does not apply as long as you leave the motorway at the first exit. These include the Basel St. Louis motorway, the Rheinfelden motorway and the Kreuzlingen motorway.

Switzerland has ONLY annual vignettes for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, including motorbikes, trikes, quads, cars, and trailers.
The vignette’s validity period is from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the following year.

It is mandatory to purchase an annual vignette, even if you drive through Switzerland for only one day.
Additionally, some tunnels in Switzerland such as Great St. Bernard Road Tunnel and Munt-la-Schara road tunnel charge separate tolls.

The Great St. Bernard Road Tunnel charges different tolls depending on the type of vehicle. The Munt-la-Schara road tunnel charges different tolls depending on the season and type of vehicle.
The vignette for both tunnels can be purchased as a one-way or a round trip. The round trip is valid for 30 days.

If you are driving a motorhome weighing over 3500 kilos, you must pay for a heavy vehicle fee (PSVA). This charge applies to all roads, not just motorways. You must also pay this charge if you stay in Switzerland, even if your vehicle is not moved. The only exception to this charge is the access routes from Austria into the Swiss customs exclusion area of Samnaun.

The obligation to have a vignette to use the roads in the country is for every vehicle. You are however not obligated to carry the confirmation with you, but we highly recommend that you do so in case of technical issues. This will allow you to prove without a doubt that you have purchased a digital vignette.

Ordering and Validity

The digital vignette for Switzerland is similar to the adhesive vignette in that it is ONLY available as an annual vignette. It remains valid from December 1st of the previous year until January 31st of the following year. The annual vignette is valid for up to 14 months in total. You can buy the e-vignette directly through our website.

Once you have completed the payment process for your order, we will begin registering your license plates immediately. Upon successful registration you will receive a confirmation of registration via email. That means your vignette is registered and valid so you will be able to begin driving.

Driving in Switzerland without a valid vignette can result in fines and penalties. The federal office for Customs and Border Security as well as Swiss national police check randomly whether you are driving without a vignette. Before your use of Swiss motorways make sure to check whether an e-vignette is issued for your vehicle.
