About a vignette

Switzerland requires all motor vehicles and trailers under 3.5 tonnes (including motorbikes, trikes, quads, and cars) that use the motorways and freeways in the country, to have a valid vignette. It is important to note that the Swiss vignette is available as an annual vignette only.  This vignette can be purchased as a paper vignette (toll sticker) or a digital one (e-vignette). The annual vignette for Switzerland is valid from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year. It is mandatory to purchase an annual vignette, even if you only drive through Switzerland for one day.

Driving without a valid vignette can result in huge fines and penalties. For your convenience, you can easily buy the e-vignette for Switzerland online directly through our website.

Is there a 1-year vignette for the Switzerland and how does it work?

Since 1985, the use of Swiss highways and freeways requires a valid vignette and you can not drive through Switzerland without a valid vignette. The vignette serves as proof of permission to drive on Swiss roads and is mandatory for vehicles and trailers weighing under 3.5 tons. Right now in Switzerland, there is only an annual vignette available.

There are two types of vignettes: physical vignette and digital vignette. As of 01.08.2023, drivers can register their vignette digitally on their license plate without attaching an adhesive vignette on the windshield. However, the option to attach the toll sticker to the windshield still exists.
The annual vignette is valid throughout all of Switzerland. For some tunnels, an additional toll is required. Tolls are charged for the Great Saint Bernard Tunnel and Munt-La-Schera Tunnel, in addition to the vignette.

You can purchase a vignette sticker at gas stations, post offices, border sales points, or a digital vignette online on our website. The purchase process is simple – just specify your vehicle category, registration country, and number plate. You can pay for your digital vignette online with a credit card, and receive an immediate confirmation email upon purchase. The e-vignette is linked to your vehicle’s license plate number and is valid immediately.

Who needs the annual vignette for the Switzerland?

All vehicles and trailers under 3.5 tonnes traveling through Switzerland and using the Swiss motorway, require a toll sticker or motorway vignette. Vignette is mandatory even if you drive for a day. Exceptions include Basel St. Louis, Rheinfelden, and Kreuzlingen motorways.

If you have a trailer weighing up to 3500 kg, you must purchase an additional vignette. Similarly, if you’re traveling with a car and caravan combination, you need to buy two vignettes.

Switzerland only offers annual vignettes, valid from December 1 of the previous year until January 31 of the following year. This means the vignette for the year 2024 is valid from December 2024 until January 31, 2025.

Separate tolls apply to tunnels such as Great St. Bernard Road and Munt-la-Schara.

Motorhomes and vehicles over 3500 kilos require a heavy vehicle charge.

FAQs

Are there also 10-day or monthly vignettes for Switzerland?

Unlike other countries in Europe with a vignette toll system, in Switzerland, there is no 10-day vignette or 30-day vignette available. There are no daily, weekly, or monthly vignettes, only annual vignettes. The vignette for 2024 is valid until January 31, 2025.

Can I postpone the start of validity later?

The Swiss motorway vignette is valid from December 1 of the previous year until January 31 of the following year, and it cannot be registered retroactively.

Can I transfer my vignette to another vehicle?

It is important to note that an e-vignette cannot be transferred to a different vehicle or number plate. This is because the e-vignette is linked to the number plate. But, it will automatically be valid for a new vehicle only if the license plate remains the same. Regarding toll stickers, it is strictly prohibited to remove the adhesive vignette, and once it is removed, it becomes invalid.

Do I need a vignette for my motorcycle?

The vignette is mandatory for driving on roads in Switzerland for vehicles and trailers that weigh below 3.5 tons gross vehicle weight. For vehicles that weigh over 3.5 tons GVW, the toll must be paid through the heavy vehicle fee. The obligation to have a vignette also applies to motorcycles. It’s important to note that the sticker vignette must be affixed to an easily accessible, non-replaceable part of the vehicle.

Does the digital vignette apply to the whole of Switzerland?

The digital vignette for Switzerland is compulsory for vehicles weighing up to 3.5t GVW and is indicated by white-green signage at the roadside. The e-vignette is valid throughout the country, however, separate tolls are charged for using the Great Saint Bernard Tunnel and Munt-La-Schera Tunnel, in addition to the vignette.
